Brand Identity Case Study: Bloom & Butterfly Garden

Cosmos blooms in my backyard garden.

I love the environment. 🌿

And I want to do design work to support it.

As a kid, if there wasn’t a sports game or bad weather, we spent weekends walking in the woods as a family. Some of my earliest memories are of my grandpa pointing out plants that were safe to eat, and my grandma’s big, beautiful garden where I admired her roses and braved the thorns to pick raspberries along the back fence.

Every family vacation involved a hike—whether it was 40 degrees or 90.

My husband and I have continued the tradition with our own kids—who sometimes whine when we tell them to get their shoes on. But soon enough are amazed when we come upon a silent owl or a snake slithers across our path.

And that garden? I have my own now. In fact, Luminea is a play on Echinacea. 🌼

I love the environment. And I want to do design work to support it.

The Bloom & Butterfly Garden brand was born of that wish. This summer, I had time to develop my own design brief. Bloom & Butterfly Garden is approachable, educational, wondrous, peaceful, and graceful. They meet people where they are at—whether buying a jar of honey in the gift shop or asking for advice on replacing their lawn with a meadow.

I imagined a loosely designed woodland and field garden where patrons could learn about native habitats and pollinators. I drew a logo that references both a flower in bloom and a butterfly, using two capital B letterforms. It was a fun challenge.

Do you know an environmental group that needs brand and design support? 🌎
